Jardin chinois au Domaine Chaumont-sur-Loire : vers l’infini et au-delà…
C’est un voyage. Une envolée. Déjà conquis par le château et son extraordinaire rayonnement culturel, nous avons suivi cette fois la maîtresse des lieux dans son endroit favori, le jardin chinois de Chaumont-sur-Loire. Dans cet entretien intimiste avec Chantal Colleu-Dumond, on écoute, on admire le travail passionné et sans cesse renouvelé. Puis on s’échappe un peu du récit, comme par magie…
« Quand j’ai besoin de me ressourcer, je pars en Chine ! », nous lâche notre guide en nous menant vers son petit coin de paradis. Une invitation au voyage qui sonne comme une promesse. On la suit avec envie, on s’amuse sur son regard en escale devant chaque petite imperfection à faire corriger par les jardiniers. Chantal Colleu-Dumond connaît sa partition sur le bout des doigts. « Les jardins de Chaumont-sur-Loire sont en évolution constante, il faut être attentif au moindre détail. Nous travaillons pour arriver à une certaine forme de perfection. » Voilà qui est dit.
La Directrice du Domaine et du Festival International des Jardins de Chaumont-sur-Loire ne compte pas laisser les choses au hasard. À son arrivée en 2007, la création du jardin chinois fait partie des premiers bouleversements qu’elle insuffle. Et derrière la rigueur, on comprend que se mêlent la passion de la terre et celle de la culture et des arts. Nous voici presque « en Chine », et déjà une forme de poésie s’installe.

It is a voyage. A soaring flight. Already won over by the castle and its extraordinary cultural radiance, this time we followed the owner of the premises to her favourite place, the Chaumont-sur-Loire Chinese Garden. In this intimate interview with Chantal Colleu-Dumond, we listen and admire the captivating and continually changing work. Then we go off script a bit, as if by magic...
"When I need to revitalise myself, I go to China!" says our guide while leading us to her little corner of paradise. It is an invitation to explore a different world that sounds like a promise. We follow her willingly and are amused by her gaze as she stops before every little imperfection to be corrected by the gardeners. Chantal Colleu-Dumond knows her score inside out. "The Chaumont-sur-Loire gardens are constantly changing; and it is important to be attentive to the smallest details. We work to achieve a certain form of perfection." That says it all.
The Director of the Estate and of the Chaumont-sur-Loire International Garden Festival does not leave things to chance. Upon arriving in 2007, the creation of the Chinese Garden was one of the first changes she inspired. And behind the rigour, we can see a blend of passion for the earth and passion for cultivation and the arts. Now we are almost "in
Puis on arrive à destination, et c’est l’extase. On fait le tour du bassin circulaire entouré de bambous et de roses. On avale les couleurs, on goûte à la paix. On commence, nous aussi, à saisir l’importance des détails. La subtilité des reliefs, de cette petite construction en bois, cabane à rêves. L’harmonie s’installe, entre Orient et Occident, entre Yin et Yang. Le souci de l’esthétique nous subjugue. « C’est une surprise permanente », concède Chantal Colleu-Dumond qui ne se lasse pas. Il faut dire que le lieu, créé par le Musée du jardin chinois de Pékin, a été pensé comme une réflexion sur l’infini. Et quand la nature se fait dompter par la philosophie, la méditation entre en jeu. On suit toujours notre hôte, mais on est comme suspendus. Le temps fait son œuvre, là, entre le sentier qui serpente, le rouge des bambous, les pivoines… On s’attarde, dociles, sous les saules. On est heureux.
Appareil photo toujours en main, la Directrice du Domaine n’a pas fini de saisir la beauté du voyage, pour notre plus grand bonheur. Pour cette œuvre en mouvement, tout est mesuré, maîtrisé. Des méthodes respectueuses de l’environnement, un travail acharné, oui. Mais surtout, un émerveillement encore intact des années après la naissance du jardin, qui permet de nous le livrer avec la force d’un premier amour. Et lorsque tombe l’or du soir sur le bout de Chine de Chantal Colleu-Dumond, l’étincelle allume aussi quelque chose en nous.
Then we arrive, and it is a rapture. We walk around the circular pond, surrounded by bamboo and roses. We take in the colours and savour the peace. We also begin to grasp the importance of the details. The subtlety of the reliefs, of a little wood building, a cabin for dreaming. A harmony sets in, between East and West, Yin and Yang. A concern for aesthetics conquers us. "It is a continual surprise", concedes Chantal Colleu-Dumond, of which one never grows bored. It must be said that the site, created by the Beijing Museum of Chinese Gardens, was designed as a reflection on the infinite. And when nature is tamed by philosophy, meditation comes into play. We are still following our host, but it as if we are suspended. Time does seems to stand still here among the winding path, red bamboo, peonies, etc. We linger docilely under the willows. We are happy.
Camera always in hand, the Director of the Estate continues to capture the beauty of the voyage, to our delight. For this work in motion, everything is measured and controlled; through hard work and methods that respect the environment of course. But above all, there is an astonishment still intact years after the garden was started, that helps bring it to us with the force of a first love. And when the sun sets on Chantal Colleu-Dumond's piece of China, the spark also ignites something in us.
